Atlanta-based DJ/producer Rafasan is a purveyor of sumptuous rhythms, where the emphasis is placed on house music’s deep roots, its sense of minimalism, and its ability to provoke feelings of euphoria in the listener. Rafasan studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and subsequently launched his own independent record label, Flying Lap Records. As a producer, he has amassed over 3 million streams and gained chart-topping success, with his work being championed by other prominent electronic music artists.
In his professional career, he has managed to balance both an extensive performance schedule (over 100 shows per year) and a prolific production rate (edits, originals, remixes). With a handful of club residencies under his belt, Rafasan has been able to find a niche for himself in the competitive market of electronic music, delivering a mixture of underground sets and high-energy festival performances that prioritise groove above all else.
When did you first begin producing electronic music?
A decade ago! Been at it for a while, and slowly perfecting the craft!
What genres did you produce to start?
I started producing progressive house in the beginning, but have made all sorts of electronic music over the years. Recently, I’ve found myself in a full-circle moment as I’ve come back to house for the first time in a while.
What brought you to the music you produce today?
I’ve always prioritized energy and the crowd reaction in my DJ sets, so that influences a lot of what I make. At the end of the day, I make what inspires me and what I think will move the dance floor.
Who are a few of your influences?
Currently, loving tracks by Ranger Trucco, Ruze, Troxy, Josh Baker, and Beave to name a few!
Looking ahead, what are your goals or plans for this year as an artist/DJ?
This upcoming year, I hope to continue my consistent releases, gain support from other DJs, and work my way up as I get bigger gig opportunities.
Do you have any exciting projects, shows, or collaborations on the horizon?
There’s always stuff cooking in the background! I can’t say too much at the moment, but be on the lookout for lots of new music and some festival appearances in the spring!
What’s been the most rewarding part of your journey as an artist/DJ so far?
I do what I do in service to the crowd. I love being in a position where I can share underground music, give the audience something they haven’t heard before, and ultimately, show them the best night possible.
Do you have a dream collaboration or venue you’d love to play one day?
EDC and Ultra have always been on the bucket list! We’ll see what happens 🙂
