BBC Radio 1 continues its celebration of female and non-binary talent within electronic music with the announcement of Jaz Imsky, Kara and Mia Koden’s appointment as the latest recipients of the Annie Nightingale Pioneers. The annual scheme, which began in 2021, was set up to celebrate the life of pioneering broadcaster Annie Nightingale, who became the first-ever female DJ on Radio 1 and went on to become the longest-serving presenter. It celebrates artists breaking boundaries, developing new talent and building a more inclusive future for dance music.
The three artists were chosen for their unique styles:
Jaz Imsky’s appointment celebrates her impressive career in bass music. Born in Singapore but raised in London, Jaz has released on influential Deep Medi, performed at some of the UK’s most respected electronic music venues including Fabric, The Warehouse Project, Boomtown and Outlook. She has also toured internationally across Asia and Europe.
Jaz Imsky says: “Music is the one thing that brings people together, uniting us beyond belief or background. So, in today’s deeply divided world, creating and sharing it matters more than ever. Inspired by Annie Nightingale’s call to action, ‘Don’t wish! Do something.’ I am truly honoured to be selected and dedicate this mix to her.”
This year’s recipients also include Drum and Bass DJ Kara, who has quickly built herself up as an exciting artist, having performed at some of the biggest events including Tomorrowland, Glastonbury and Boomtown. She has also released The Foundation in 2024, an independent label and event series celebrating Jungle and Drum and Bass. This is going to grow even further in 2027 with a nationwide tour and brand new music.
Kara says: “I’m incredibly honoured to have been selected as an Annie Nightingale Pioneer of Dance Music. To have my work and contribution to the scene recognised in this way means so much to me. Annie paved the way for so many women in dance music, and I hope to continue her legacy through my show by championing the next generation of talent, supporting emerging artists and giving a platform to the voices shaping the future of dance music.”
Mia Koden, a South Sudanese British DJ and producer from South London, has been making waves with her bold approach to underground electronic music. Mia has released on reputable Ilian Tape and has had many achievements, including winning ‘Breakthrough Artist Of The Year’ from Resident Advisor in 2024 and a ‘Breakthrough Producer’ nomination from DJ Mag’s Best Of British Awards. Mia was also an assistant producer on Nightingale’s BBC Radio 1 show in 2018, so this award means a lot to her personally.
Mia Koden says: “Annie was bold, passionate and cared so deeply about music – a true legend in this. I briefly worked as her assistant producer on her BBC Radio 1 show back in 2018 with Martha and never expected to be on the other side, so it’s a lovely surprise to be picked for this. I’ll use the show to spotlight other artists with big bassy tunes, just like Annie always did.”
Mia wants to use this award to shine a light on other artists.
The three Pioneers will be broadcasting on BBC Radio 1 on Saturday 7th November between 11pm-2am. They will each perform a unique mix.
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says: “Annie was a true pioneer who opened doors for generations of DJs and artists. I’m proud we can continue her legacy through this initiative, giving emerging talent a platform on Radio 1. This year’s recipients are a brilliant example of the talent that is shaping the future of dance and electronic music.”
The choice of 2026 shows the ongoing dedication to recognising artists who are shaping tomorrow’s dance music culture.
